"Thilan Thushara will return to Sri Lanka due to a shoulder injury, and he will not be match fit for approximately two to four weeks," Sri Lankan Cricket said in a statement. "Dilhara Fernando will replace him." Against spinners, Gambhir preferred to stay back, or jump out of the track and get close enough to the delivery. He did pull out the big hits in the 90s, as he is used to doing because he prefers to get the 90s done with quickly. He took 61 deliveries to move from overnight 74 to 90, but then hit three boundaries in six balls to reach his century quickly. And then scored two runs in 25 deliveries. The approach in the 90s was similar to that in Napier, when he stepped out and lofted Daniel Vettori and Jeetan Patel for fours in consecutive overs.

•Virender Sehwag averages 50 in five Tests against Sri Lanka, but only 18.66 in two games against the same team at home. Of his 400 runs, 251 came in one Test.

•These two teams played each other only once in Kanpur, in 1986, and it was a high-scoring draw. They couldn't finish even the first innings; Sri Lanka were all out for 420 and India were 676 for 7 when the curtains fell on the Test.

•In 20 Tests at this ground, only once has the team winning the toss chosen to field - India did it way back in 1964, in a drawn game against England

For India, Harbhajan Singh is yet to recapture the form he showed on the tour of New Zealand, where he was at the top of his game. The usually skillful Amit Mishra had a poor game, struggling for control and looking out of sorts. Will India see it as a one-off bad game and trust Mishra with another? While Herath and Mishra didn't perform well the onus, though, would be on the senior spinners, Muralitharan and Harbhajan, to show the way

Day 1 here India 385/6 (90.0 ov)

*Rahul Dravid (rhb) 177 251 26 1 70.51
Harbhajan Singh (rhb) 2 11 0 0 18.18

Superb day's play, whatever side you are on. Good to see a Test after a couple months of limited-overs cricket. It started out Sri Lanka's way and ended with India in command. That this is the case rests largely on Dravid's shoulders. Another innings of sheer determination and class. Not out on 177 out of a total of 385. What a turnaround of events from 32 for 4, after Welegedara swung out the top order. That seems a long time ago now. Dravid was aided by Yuvraj and Dhoni, who played excellently for his second Test century, and is undoubtedly the hero of the day. Began aggressively, ticking along at a strike-rate of over 80, then settled and batted out the entire last two sessions. Congratulations for a fine innings.

Rahul Dravid's 27th century - and tenth 150-plus score - carried more intent than probably any of his Test innings, and helped by MS Dhoni's second century and Yuvraj Singh's seventh half-century, led India's remarkable comeback from 32 for 4 in the first half hour. Along the way, he took part in his 77th and 78th 100-run partnerships (both world records), scored more runs than he ever has in a day's play, crossed Steve Waugh to become the fifth-highest run-getter in Tests, reached 11,000 career runs, and most importantly undid the superb start that two rookies gave Sri Lanka. Chanaka Welegedara and Dammika Prasad were last-minute replacements for Nuwan Kulasekara and Thilan Thushara, but they combined to give India flashbacks of their previous Test in Ahmedabad, when they were shot out for 76 by South Africa.

Dravid saw off Welegedara's swing with three boundaries in one over just after lunch, which summed up how well he played. One of the them was clipped late, to the right of midwicket, the next was cover-driven all along the ground, and the third flicked to the left of midwicket - all despite the swing

Dhoni also suggested his team would have to change the mental approach to batting, this Test coming after 17 continuous ODIs and five Twenty20s for them. The India XI, though, wore a settled look; Sreesanth and Pragyan Ojha sitting out, and as expected the two Tamil Nadu back-up batsmen not getting a look in

Sri Lanka, even though they have played regular Test matches and risen to No. 2 in the rankings, were looking to win a Test in India for the first time. They started off on an unfortunate note: Nuwan Kulasekara and Thilan Thushara, their two successful fast bowlers, picked niggles and were not on the final list, neither was Ajantha Mendis. Dammika Prasad and Chanaka Welegedara, total experience of four Tests between them, were to take the new ball, and left-arm spinner Rangana Herath playing in place of Mendis.

India's first Test in more than seven months began on a good note: MS Dhoni won the toss and chose to bat on a good, hard Ahmedabad pitch, "very different from the one we last played on". The last Test that Dhoni referred to was the one against South Africa, when India were shot out for 76 on the first morning

Pakistan have a far superior record in Twenty20s this year - they won the World Twenty20 and overall have seven wins in nine games. New Zealand are no slouches themselves - they beat Sri Lanka 2-0 in what was their only highlight of a disappointing tour in September- but their success in Abu Dhabi couldn't hide their struggle against spin. Saeed Ajmal and Shahid Afridi, with their wily variations, nibbled away at New Zealand while proving economical. With the pair, and possibly Shoaib Malik, likely to gobble a major share of the 20 overs, the New Zealand batsmen, who gave up 12 wickets at 22.42, face a serious challenge.

Here Hero Honda Cup 2009 live streaming 7th odi india vs australia

For India, it's a bleak and depressing one. Three successive losses have cost them the series against a patchwork-quilt Australian side. Despite an appalling injury list, Australia have managed to hold their nerve at key moments. India have lapsed back into 1990s mode, with stellar individual performances like Sachin Tendulkar's 175 in Hyderabad expected to paper over collective weakness. That hasn't happened, and the pre-series hype of going for the No.1 ranking now sounds pathetic

For the second series in a row at home, they head to Mumbai, the heartland of Indian cricket, with the cause hopelessly lost. Back in 2007, Zaheer Khan and Murali Kartik pulled off a late show to give the scoreline (4-2) a slightly more respectable look, and that's as much as India can aspire to at the DY Patil Stadium. As for Australia, having won the Champions Trophy and now swatting aside the challenge of one of their big rivals away from home, this is a happy time, an occasion to revel in the success of a system that can produce stand-ins like Doug Bollinger and Clint McKay. Even with half the first team back home nursing injuries and niggles, they've been far too good

Yes, Sachin Tendulkar's 175 against Australia in Hyderabad last week was indeed the highest individual score ever made in an unsuccessful run-chase in a one-day international: the previous record was 149 not out, by Shivnarine Chanderpaul for West Indies against India in Nagpur in 2006-07. There have been only two higher scores in a losing cause in ODIs than Tendulkar's 175 - Charles Coventry's 194 not out for Zimbabwe against Bangladesh in Bulawayo earlier this year, and Matthew Hayden's unbeaten 181 for Australia v New Zealand in Hamilton in 2006-07

There is always a greater thrust to the affairs of a short series. Momentum changes quicker, faults have to be identified and rectified sooner, form has to be found, urgency is everything. As brightly as Pakistan began this three-match contest, it is New Zealand who now hold the whip and it hasn't even been a week since it all started.

In coming back to level the series, New Zealand were magnificent. Like Australia here earlier in the year, their batsmen took some time, but eventually adjusted to the conditions; in Brendon McCullum's case, he adjusted to a lot more than just conditions and all of New Zealand will hope that it might be the start of something special. He got good support from his colleagues, none more than Martin Guptill. The lower order, as long as Daniel Vettori is leading it, does not crumble readily.

Denly's innings was timely after his failure in the first warm-up game and the corresponding success for Jonathan Trott and Eoin Morgan. The expectation is one of that trio will miss out when Kevin Pietersen returns, but with them all showing promising form the selectors will be faced with a tough decision. There has rarely been any concern over Strauss's form in recent times, but it is always good for a touring side to have their captain in the runs and his hundred followed a confident 72 against the Eagles.

He also played his part in a run-out in the same over, taking the throw from his Victoria captain Cameron White to find Ravindra Jadeja short. McKay sent down several well-directed yorkers that kept the over to three runs and he was especially glad Tendulkar wasn't still around to guide the chase.

From being over here in the Champions League, Shane Harwood and Damien Wright, senior guys for Victoria, said no matter what happens just have smile on your face, walk back to your mark and do it again," he said. "There's going to be days when they hit fours and sixes, the batsman is allowed to play a good shot."

As it turned out, McKay had good reason to smile. He could well have jumped a couple of places in Australia's list of fast bowlers but he knows that it will be tough to force his way into the side during Australia's home summer.

Shane Watson. He started off steadily before hammering three sixes and a few boundaries. He set up the platform with Shaun Marsh. Watson faced the first ball, from Praveen Kumar, and 99 overs later, bowled the last over to him. His three wickets were critical too - especially Yuvraj and the breakthrough one of Suresh Raina. While this will be remembered as Tendulkar's match, Watson ended up on the winning side

The consolidation phase of the Australian innings was very boring. Don't get me wrong but muscular batting is not easy on the eye. I thought Tendulkar had a point in suggesting ODIs have two innings. But that would be manufacturing excitement, like with a lot of Twenty20 cricket. Good cricket is all about exciting match-ups and great performances. Twenty-overs cricket limits that scope and so does not have a hook to engage the viewer, most times. When you think of ODIs, you would think Sachin; but you are most likely to think of an administrator when you think Twenty20

Pakistani players were not allowed to take part in this year's edition of the IPL after their own government refused to give them permission to travel to India. The decision was based primarily on security concerns and whether or not Pakistan's players would be safe in India in the aftermath of the Mumbai terror attacks a year ago. The tournament was eventually shifted to South Africa for security reasons but Pakistan's players were still not allowed to take part.

However, the board is hoping the situation may be different this time round, indicating that permission has been granted to the players by the board and higher authorities. "The PCB has given permission to players to take part in the IPL," Butt told Cricinfo. "Abdul Razzaq recently approached me and he has been given permission as well as others. Lalit Modi emailed to ask what the status of our players regarding IPL was and, when I met him in India, I told him the players were available and the relevant authorities had given permission."

Two-all doesn't mean this becomes a fresh three-match series, as MS Dhoni would suggest. Australia have simply lost too many players, which has made India the favourites though the Mohali loss puts the pressure back on the hosts. They will know losing the series in home conditions against an under-strength Australia will be an embarrassment; a 4-3 result won't be much better received. All of which gives Australia added incentive to win on Thursday and take a step closer to the grand heist.

India have had their share of injury troubles, with Zaheer Khan out for the series and Gautam Gambhir missing the fourth ODI. But the selectors' retaining the existing XV for the final three games suggests Gambhir's injury is not serious, nor is Virender Sehwag's. India need a win in Hyderabad to start their march towards 5-2, anything less than which should disappoint them. By the look of things right now, there are no excuses in sight either.

•Rajiv Gandhi Stadium, a relatively new addition to Hyderabad, hasn't been kind to teams who call themselves hosts. Deccan Chargers have gone through a season each of IPL and Champions League without registering a win. India have lost both the ODIs they have played here: to South Africa in 2005-06 and to Australia in 2007-08. Hyderabad, who call this their home ground, have lost six out of seven List A games they have played here, and won three and lost four first-class games.

•Yuvraj Singh has scored two centuries in those two lost matches: 103 off 122 balls against South Africa, and 121 off 115 balls against Australia.

•MS Dhoni and Michael Hussey have been the most consistent batsmen in the series. Dhoni has scored 255 runs at 85 and is the only centurion in the series on either side. Hussey has managed 247 at 82.33, his lowest score being 40, in Mohali.

Australia, meanwhile, had a third player from their original tour party flying home because of injury. James Hopes picked up a hamstring strain in the first one-dayer, remained with the squad longer than fellow casualties Brett Lee and Tim Paine, but hadn't recovered quickly enough for him to be able to play the remaining ODIs. Clint McKay, the Victoria seamer, was the latest addition to the Australian squad after Moises Henriques and Graham Manou. Mitchell Johnson seems to be pulling through the series despite a sore ankle. Other national hopefuls might be watching tomorrow's match thinking they might be next to receive a call from Andrew Hilditch.

James has done everything he can with medical staff to try and make himself available for the remaining games of the tour of India," Kevin Sims, the team physiotherapist, said. "However due to the compressed nature of this tour and his speed of recovery so far, we feel now we have insufficient time to have James fully fit to take part in the remaining games of this series.
